Health classes explained

Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard Plus and Standard: what each rank represents and how you fit into each.

Insurance companies set term premiums according to rate class. Labels shift between carriers, though the ranking stays the same: Preferred Plus (sometimes Super Preferred or Preferred Best), Preferred, Standard Plus and Standard, plus surcharges for elevated risk. Tobacco users occupy a separate, higher-cost tier.

What underwriters look at

Weight and height, blood pressure and cholesterol levels, family health background (heart or cancer before age 60), driving history, medication record, job and activities, and any nicotine use. Top class demands excellent marks on nearly everything; Preferred is more forgiving; Standard Plus and Standard accept managed situations like stable blood pressure on medication.

How to use the quote tool

Answer the health question truthfully: Excellent correlates to Preferred Plus, Very good to Preferred, Good to Standard Plus and Average to Standard. Quotes match your class; the company verifies it through underwriting. Uncertain about your class? Pull quotes at two levels and weigh them; the application will settle it. An inflated class guess does not reduce your eventual premium; it just skews the estimate you see now.

Susman Insurance Agency helps you find carriers that take a less strict view of your particular situation; that fit often outweighs the advertised price.
